New Initiatives

Architectural Engineering and Design

Building on two local traditions with innovation and design at their cores -- Chicago's celebrated architecture and Northwestern University's excellence in engineering -- the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern will offer a new undergraduate concentration in architectural engineering and design, beginning in fall 2008. Students who complete the program will be prepared to join the construction industry after graduation or pursue graduate studies in architecture or construction management. They will study with experienced Chicago architects, and a mandatory studio course will enable them to build a portfolio.

Engineering Life Science Facility

A five-story addition to the Technological Institute will be built to house engineering life sciences programs at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. The facility will occupy space on the north side of the Technological Institute between the B and C wings and will be a multidisciplinary center of research excellence designed to retain and attract the best faculty in the field of engineering life sciences. The ground floor of the new building along with some adjoining space in the Technological Institute will be used for the Integrated Molecular Structure Education and Research Center, an improved and expanded version of the existing Analytical Services Laboratory, a facility that provides essential shared instrumentation for the analysis of molecules and materials.

Farley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation

The Farley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, established in 2007, works to evolve engineering beyond the applications of the sciences to the creation of businesses that capitalize on innovations. The center empowers McCormick engineers with the skills to be successful entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs.

Financial Engineering

Financial engineering is an interdisciplinary field that integrates methods and knowledge from mathematics, statistics, financial economics, operations research, and computer science. Financial engineers develop quantitative tools that help financial institutions, manufacturing and service firms, and public institutions make disciplined financial decisions in the face of risk and uncertainty. Financial engineers also devise computational algorithms to implement these tools and calibrate them to financial market data. McCormick faculty members conduct a vibrant research program in financial engineering.

Global McCormick

A new emphasis has been placed on strategic international collaboration. In recent annual reports, nearly half of McCormick faculty reported international engagement - a total of nearly 600 relationships. All international partnerships are coordinated centrally, and we are developing a web site to showcase these activities.

Initiative for Sustainability at Northwestern

The Initiative for Sustainability and Energy at Northwestern (ISEN) was established in 2008 as an umbrella organization with the goal of supporting and enhancing NU's research, teaching and outreach activities in the areas of energy and sustainability. ISEN's mission is to create, advance and communicate new science, technology, and policy for sustainability and energy. Its particular focus is on sustainable energy supply, demand and use.

Kellogg Undergraduate Certificate Programs

The Undergraduate Certificate Program in Managerial Analytics, a joint program between the Kellogg School of Management and McCormick, builds on the analytical strengths of McCormick undergraduates and provides them with content relevant for careers at the nation's elite management consulting firms and product or service companies.

The Murphy Insitute

The Murphy Institute is a program that enables a group of McCormick's best undergraduates to engage in self-directed activities of interest to them, with support from faculty advisors. These activities could include on-campus research, involvement with design projects, or engagement in off-campus scholarly work. A Murphy Institute Scholar may follow an existing curriculum, or the Scholar may design his or her own curriculum with individual interests in mind through the Combined Studies degree program.

Northwestern Center for Engineering Education Research

This center, formed in January 2007, is a catalyst to transform engineering education locally, nationally, and globally. NCEER builds a community that conducts leading research on how to best educate engineering students as adaptive experts who can solve and anticipate global technological challenges. NCEER supports interdisciplinary research in engineering education, cultivating relationships within McCormick, across Northwestern, and with other universities with similar aims.

Segal Design Institute

Gordon and Carole Segal, co-founders of Crate and Barrel, made a significant donation in March 2007 to establish a new institute for design at Northwestern University. The new institute builds on McCormick's longstanding commitment to design. The institute fosters curricular development and research in design across all schools at Northwestern.
