Probing the Lung Microbiome and its role in Disease

Prof. Erica Hartmann is a co-Investigator of SCRIPT, renewed Systems Biology Center

The National Institutes of Health recently renewed funding for the Successful Clinical Response In Pneumonia Therapy (SCRIPT) Systems Biology Center, where Prof. Erica Hartmann is a co-Investigator. The SCRIPT Center, led by Dr. Rich Wunderink, takes a multi-pronged approach to understanding pneumonia and improving the clinical treatment and patient outcomes, integrating clinical research, molecular biology, microbiology, and modeling. Prof. Hartmann is leading efforts to characterize the lung microbiome with the goal of understanding its role in disease and health. The work is an extension of her group’s efforts to enhance environmental monitoring for healthcare-associated pathogens and better understand the microbial communities in and around us.

SCRIPT is one of only a handful of U19 awards granted by the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Disease in response to the 2021 funding opportunity for Systems Biology for Infectious Diseases.  The SCRIPT Center was originally established in 2018.  The renewal brings the total funding for the center to $23,983,586 through 2027.
