Tackle today’s critical computer science problems with faculty members who have developed new ideas to achieve results in all aspects of computer science. You’ll also broaden your definition of computer science research by working with CS+X faculty who create interdisciplinary connections between computer science and fields ranging from economics to law to art.

Outside the Classroom

Professional Development

Graduate students have opportunities to teach, attend workshops and conferences, and have full access to Engineering Career Development and Northwestern Career Advancement.

Home in Chicago’s Growing Technology Sector

Northwestern’s unique location provides both the comforts of home and opportunities for career growth. Northwestern's Evanston campus is well connected to downtown Chicago by the Purple line train. Graduate students choose from a spectrum of suburban or urban home environments, all while enjoying the robust research partnerships Northwestern is developing with neighboring institutions and research organizations.

Student Groups and Organizations

Student groups and organizations provide an important opportunity to develop leadership skills and create opportunities to network with their fellow students, as well as faculty members, staff, and professionals in the field.

The Crown Family Graduate Internship Program

PhD candidates may elect to participate in the Crown Family Graduate Internship Program. This opportunity permits doctoral candidates to gain practical experience in industry or in national research laboratories in areas closely related to their research. This internship can provide significant positive impetus to the thesis effort, and may provide a basis for future employment.
