The Chemical and Biological Engineering Department is pleased to present a seminar by Northwestern faculty member Niall Mangan as part of our ChBE Seminar Series.

Niall Mangan will present a seminar titled "Mathematical methods for Chemical and Biological Engineering."

ABSTRACT: My group works on mathematical modeling of complex systems including biological networks and chemical catalyst systems. In both organic and inorganic systems spatial-temporal effects influence chemical reaction flux, and we develop models to capture, study, and assist in the engineering of these effects. In addition to developing the models themselves, we also create new methods to automatically construct models from data, given known biology, chemistry and physics. In this talk, I will discuss work on modeling the spatial organization of metabolic reactions in bacterial micrompartments, a spatial model for electrocatalysis, and sparse-optimization methods for model discovery of differential equations.

BIO: Niall M. Mangan received the Dual BS degrees in mathematics and physics, with a minor in chemistry, from Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY, USA, in 2008, and the PhD degree in systems biology from Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA, in 2013. Dr. Mangan worked as a postdoctoral associate in the Photovoltaics Lab at MIT from 2013-2015 and as an Acting Assistant Professor at the University of Washington, Seattle, from 2016-2017. She is currently an Assistant Professor of engineering sciences and applied mathematics at Northwestern University, where she works at the interface of mechanistic modeling and data-driven statistical inference. Her group applies these methods to biological, chemical, and material problems.
