Mahi Shah graduated from NMIMS University, Mumbai with a Bachelors in Applied Statistics & Analytics in 2021. With a natural aptitude for statistics and quantitative decision making, Shah finished first in her cohort with a GPA of 3.99/4.00. During her time at NMIMS, she cultivated an interdisciplinary skillset encompassing multiple subject areas like statistics, mathematics, economics and computer science, while simultaneously learning a wide range of software skills. For her final project, she implemented a machine learning algorithm using OpenCV in Python for data extraction from images that helped eradicate the manual efforts of database creation using drivers’ licences as a sample. She used morphological image processing techniques and macros in Excel for data cleaning and achieved an accuracy of 90.16%. This project reaffirmed her interest in the domain and fuelled her ambition to pursue a professional career in the same. She went on to take the CFA professional Level 1 examinations and scored above the 90th percentile globally. This helped her put into perspective the indispensability of data science in investment analysis. She started her professional career in the fintech space by working as a Quant Analyst at Equity Data Science and consequently at the leading firm Bloomberg LP. She has hence witnessed first-hand how well-designed data systems can have a transformational impact on various financial market participants. At EDS, Shah worked with CXOs, traders and PMs of top investment firms (~collective AUM $12.5B+) to develop insightful and custom analytics tools on R and Spotfire that helped them leverage technology in their respective investment cycles. At Bloomberg, as part of the Global Data Analytics team, she lead the BI initiative in APAC to summarise huge data sets on Qlik sense that helped assess strategic business targets and isolate workflow inefficiencies. She was awarded “India Data Rookie of the Year 2022-23” for her exemplary performance. By joining Northwestern’s MS MLDS program, Shah eagerly looks forward to build her knowledge base in the evolving discipline of data science and leverage these sophisticated techniques in the financial sector. She is also excited to interact with a class full of high potential individuals, liaise with an illustrious alumni network and witness the finest faculty in the world in action.
