Haowen graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, in December 2023 with a double degree in Mathematics/Economics and International Development Studies. With a strong passion for using quantitative methods to solve social and industrial problems, she explored subjects including mathematics, statistics, economics, and the social sciences. Throughout her academic journey, she acquired not only technical skills in programming languages such as Python, SQL, R, and C++, but also soft skills in critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and presentation. She participated in interdisciplinary research sponsored by the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates, where she integrated skills in applied math and machine learning with concepts from sociology to develop a fairness-aware dimensionality reduction algorithm.Professionally, Haowen has interned in various industries, including tech, finance, and aviation, where she focused on driving business solutions through data-driven techniques. She has demonstrated expertise in business analytics, data visualization, database management, machine learning, and statistical analysis. During her recent summer internship at Hawaiian Airlines, she identified opportunities to enhance the operational reliability of the newly introduced Boeing 787 fleet using visualizations and analysis in Tableau. By presenting her findings to engineering, operations, and executive teams, she honed her data storytelling skills for both technical and non-technical stakeholders. As an aspiring data scientist, she is excited to pursue further advanced, industry-related training and experience in data science through Northwestern's MLDS program.
