Yee Jun Ow graduated from Drake University in 2017 with a double major in Actuarial Science and Mathematics. Soon after graduation, Yee Jun started his career at an insurance company as an Actuarial Analyst, where he achieved certification as an Associate of the Society of Actuaries. Working as an Actuary has provided Yee Jun the foundational knowledge in actuarial principles and the opportunity to explore predictive analytics. In parallel with his actuarial work, Yee Jun has cultivated proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, SQL, and VBA. His growing interest in Data Science and Data Engineering has driven him to apply these technical skills to optimize workflows, build efficient ETL pipelines, and develop web applications, to solve critical business problems. Recently, Yee Jun transitioned to a new role, where he now leads the Analytical Engineering function. In this position, he spearheads efforts to integrate advanced data analytics with business operations, focusing on enhancing data management, developing scalable solutions in Azure Databricks, and driving strategic insights. This role leverages his extensive experience and skills, positioning him at the forefront of the technological and analytical innovation within the organization. Notably, he implemented a risk scoring model to support underwriting efforts and developed a web application that provides underwriters with easier access to his model and additional functionalities to enhance the underwriting process. Yee Jun’s enthusiasm for joining Northwestern University’s Master of Science in Machine Leaning and Data Science program is palpable. He is eager to delve deeper into the realms of Data Science and Advanced Analytics, seeing this as a perfect opportunity to build on his existing knowledge. The hands-on experience offered through Practicum and Capstone projects particularly excites him, as he believes these will allow him to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios effectively. Yee Jun is also looking forward to learning from and collaborating with Northwestern’s exceptional faculty and his peers, seeing this as a crucial step towards achieving his goal of becoming a Data Scientist.
