Keyu Shen recently graduated from the University of Washington with a major in Applied Mathematics, focusing on Data Science, and a minor in Informatics. Initially, he pursued an economics major due to family influence, but during his first two years at UW, he developed a passion for data science because of the various ways it could be applied to real-world applications and uses for creating impact in life, business, environment, education, and more.He became fascinated by how data science allows him to explore different fields and learn new things, marking the beginning of his journey in data science. To build his expertise, Keyu took various data science courses such as Database and Data Modeling, Machine Learning, and Financial Econometrics, and so on. These courses honed his skills in Python, SQL, R, etc, providing experience in both individual and team projects. For his thesis project, Keyu utilized Matplotlib, Seaborn, and scikit-learn to analyze and visualize the geographical density, job variety, skillset concentration, and salary distribution of jobs across the US. He constructed regression models to identify key factors contributing to high salary ranges and presented his findings in a 14-page summary to a 200+ audience at the Data Science Fair, offering data-driven recommendations to empower job candidates with informed career decisions.Beyond his own project, Keyu collaborated with Prof. Amin as a research assistant in the UW Applied Math department on machine learning for long-term walking droplet simulations. He used tracking software to monitor droplet positions and applied Kernel Regression to predict paths, creating accuracy comparison plots for hyperparameter tuning and model optimization. Keyu is excited to delve deeper into data science and explore its applications across various fields in future studying at MLDS Program. He is particularly interested in how data science can be integrated into different disciplines to drive innovation and create impact. Through the MLDS program, Keyu looks forward to discovering new opportunities and expanding his expertise in this dynamic field.
