People / Students / Class of 2025
Zhe Shen graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2023 with a major in Financial Actuarial Mathematics and a specialization in computing. He is passionate about applying machine learning algorithms to cloud computing environments to facilitate autonomous learning and intelligent decision-making. His proficiency in programming and data management languages, including Python, Go, and SQL, equips him to tackle various data analysis and system development challenges. In 2021, Zhe joined The People's Insurance Company (Group) of China Property and Casualty Co. Ltd. as a data analyst intern in the agricultural insurance department. Confronting the surge of business pressure from Typhoon (a tropical cyclone developing in the northwestern Pacific), he creatively developed data visualization tools and automation scripts. Through keyword extraction and abnormal value detection, Zhe streamlined the manual data screening process, significantly improving team efficiency and responsiveness. Furthermore, he optimized the data ETL process and automated the generation of four critical disaster and claims reports through Python scripts, saving 20 hours of weekly workload. After graduating from UCLA, Zhe returned to his hometown as a data warehouse engineer intern in the technology division of local government. In this key position, he enhances the monitoring mechanism of the data platform, optimizes system performance, and strengthens data security protection through algorithms such as Isolation Forest, Random Forest, and LSTM. By refactoring the index structure, optimizing the query execution plan, and adjusting the database parameter settings, Zhe has reduced the database memory footprint by 20% and shortened the query response time by over 30%. Zhe's pursuit of technology extends well beyond data science. He harbors a strong enthusiasm for distributed computing technologies in cloud gaming, as well as exploring analytical approaches to the business of the gaming industry. In addition, due to his finance-related academic background, Zhe maintains a keen interest in financial markets and possesses sharp business insights. Through the MLDS program at Northwestern University, Zhe is striving to become a comprehensive data scientist with both technical depth and analytical skills.
