Wuyou (Tony) Shu graduated from New York University in 2024, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Media, Culture, and Communication and a minor in Data Science. His interdisciplinary education provided a robust foundation in both qualitative and quantitative analysis and helped bridge the gap between humanistic insights and data-driven decision-making. During his undergraduate studies, Wuyou utilized data science for social good and was committed to ethical data practices. He conducted an anti-stigma study on low tampon usage among Chinese women, employing sentiment analysis to understand their attitudes and designing a marketing campaign to destigmatize female shame. He also had an in-depth presentational research on data center heat waste and tradeoffs through sensitivity analysis. During his time as a Business Analytics & Marketing Intern at MSL Publicis Groupe, he helped with ESG marketing projects and designed a data ingestion engine using Python's robust request-handling libraries. It interfaced with clipping houses and customer data through their respective APIs and custom web scraping scripts. To avoid skewed insights, he also incorporated gender, sex, and location data into the datasets. Crucially, he integrated Scikit-learn library with K-Means to segment data for targeted ESG campaign strategies, and Logistic Regression and Gradient Boosting Machines for predictive analytics on customer response patterns so that the platform can improve customer segmentation. This led to an increase in campaign effectiveness to 17.2%. His work later contributed to the establishment of a new sustainability department within the company. Wuyou also gained valuable experience at PwC and VMLY&R, where he used Excel, SQL, and R for business analysis. In his academic research, Wuyou conducted a multifaceted correlation study on art preferences. He used Mann-Whitney U Test and T Test, PCA, K-Means, and KNN to provide actionable business insights for gallery curation. Another notable project was his analytical study on the "Zoombombing" phenomenon in China's digital market, linking up knowledge on education, algorithms, and media metrics to inform cybersecurity practice. In his free time, Wuyou likes to explore diverse cultures and languages. He achieved fluency in English, Chinese, Shanghainese, and conversational proficiency in Japanese and Spanish. As he embarks upon the MLDS program at Northwestern University, Wuyou hopes to further develop his knowledge of Predictive Analytics, Data Mining, and Text Analytics, which are highly applicable to his interests in marketing. Wuyou aims to become a data scientist who not only possesses technical expertise but also understands the importance of addressing biases and promoting social responsibility in data analytics. Ultimately, he aims to use his skills to help organizations make more informed decisions, improve operational efficiency, and promote sustainable growth.
