Martin Wainwright to Discuss the Interface of Statistics and Optimization at CS+X Colloquium
“Statistics Meets Optimization” will take place March 16
Although big data presents many opportunities to discover hidden information and valuable insights, it also poses a number of challenges at the interface of statistics and optimization.
As a part of Northwestern Engineering’s CS+X colloquium series, Martin Wainwright, a professor at the University of California-Berkeley, will discuss meeting these challenges with randomized dimensionality reduction techniques, or sketching.
“Statistics Meets Optimization: Fast Randomized Algorithms for Large Data Sets” will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 16 in M345 at the Technological Institute.
With a joint appointment in the Department of Statistics and Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Wainwright studies high-dimensional statistics, information theory, and statistical machine learning.
Wainwright has received numerous honors and awards, including the 2014 Presidents’ Award in Statistics from the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies, which is considered the most prestigious award in statistics. He also received an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship in 2005 and MIT’s 2002 George Sprowls Prize.
