Summary

The Theme Park Engineering and Design Group (TPED) is requesting to fund our team’s trip to Orlando, Florida to compete in the Toronto Metropolitan Thrill Design Invitational presented by Universal Creative. This is a highly prestigious competition that will allow its participants to gain design experience and feedback from industry professionals and provide networking opportunities that could help them break into the industry. This will be the second time Northwestern University participates in this competition. We hope to learn from our experience last year and bring an even better performance this year.

Planned Activities/Investments

The competition is runs from November 8th to November 13th. At the competition, the team will receive several design prompts where they have about 24 hours to create concept pitches for each (pitches include concept art, attraction write-ups and layouts, and 3D models). These pitches are then presented in front of a panel of jurors from Universal Creative. Ahead of the competition, the team will meet throughout the summer and fall to practice working together on several theme park design prompts.

Impact

We will be sending a team of 8 to the competition. Participating in this competition will impact the team by allowing them to experience what it is like to work professionally in the themed entertainment industry. The competition is designed to simulate what the daily life of a themed entertainment design professional is. This competition also allows the team to get their work in front of industry professionals and create connections. It also allows the team to network with other students that have interest in the same industry as them.

Sustainability

If need be, sending a team to this competition could also be supported by grants from ASG and MSAB.

Deliverables

Multiple concept pitches that are presented to a group of jurors from Universal Creative during competition weekend. Concept pitches include concept art, attraction write-ups and layouts, and 3D models.

Previous Projects

TPED has previously been funded by the Murphy Society for our haunted house event. The haunted house project brought together a team of students to create a full walk-through horror experience during Friday night of Halloween weekend. Hosted in the Louis Room at the Norris Center, the haunted house garnered an attendance of over 500 students.
