Optimization and statistics are everywhere, touching all engineering disciplines in an ever more sophisticated way. Nowhere are they more important than in the rapidly evolving field of machine learning, which has recently made some remarkable breakthroughs. Equally important to machine learning are computing power and the data collected from our increasingly networked world. The Center for Optimization and Statistical Learning (OSL) integrates these research areas to enable the creation of new AI systems — while training a new generation of engineers.
Our research is focused on the following interconnected areas:
Optimization methods and models
Statistical and machine learning methods and models
Applications in healthcare, energy systems, digital commerce, and more
The center functions as a collaboration primarily between the departments of Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences (IEMS), Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Computer Science (CS) at the McCormick School of Engineering. The Center operates with an interdisciplinary team of researchers and students, and also draws faculty and expertise from Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management and Feinberg School of Medicine.
