Transfer Credits

Transfer credit may be generally applied toward McCormick Social Sciences & Humanities Theme and Unrestricted Elective degree requirements.  After review to ensure equivalency/relevance, transfer credit may also be applied towards requirements in the areas of Mathematics, Basic Science, Engineering Analysis and Computer Proficiency, and Design and Communication. Transfer credit without a direct equivalent course at Northwestern must be reviewed via curriculum petition to satisfy any category other than Unrestricted Elective degree requirements.

McCormick allows no more than 4 units of transfer credit to be applied towards Major Program degree requirements (21 units), and only with departmental approval.  Some departments may further limit the number of transfer credits that may be counted toward Major Program requirements.

Students must follow the steps outlined in Northwestern’s transfer credit policy to ensure courses are eligible for transfer to Northwestern University.

McCormick’s processes regarding transfer credit from other institutions in the US and for study abroad coursework is found below.

U.S. Institutions

Current McCormick students who plan to transfer credit from another U.S. institution must follow the steps  outlined on the University Registrar's Transfer Credit after Matriculation page before beginning any coursework to ensure the proposed course is reviewed for relevance and equivalency.

Study Abroad

Students interested in study abroad should review the page for McCormick students on the Global Learning Office’s website for current information on transferring study abroad credit.
