CIV_ENV 201: Engineering Possibilities: Decision Science in the Age of Smart Technologies

Description

The future of engineering is being framed by unprecedented challenges of climate change, urbanization and social inequality alongside new opportunities for planning, building and managing more livable cities. Future engineers are urged to take on leadership roles that require them to understand the interplay between societal challenges and technical solutions. We propose a new course to better prepare our civil and environmental engineering (CEE) students for such leadership. “Engineering Possibilities” is an innovative undergraduate course preparing students to address the complexity of problems and engineering solutions with pervasive (and conflicting) impacts. For instance students will address questions such as: How do we define, measure and monitor urban resilience, both to natural stressors (climate change, disasters) and social factors (resource equity)? The learning will be based on a mix of lectures, in-class exercises and team work.
