Academics / Undergraduate StudyEnvironmental Engineering Minor
Environmental engineering has become an integral part of the engineering field as a whole, since it aims to mitigate the effects of human perturbations to the environment as a result of the development of society. The environmental engineering minor is designed for students who have an interest in incorporating environmental best practices into their careers as engineers.
Required Courses
The minor consists of six core courses and two electives.
Core Courses
- CIV ENV 201: Engineering Possibilities: Decision Science in the Age of Smart Technologies
- CIV ENV 202: Biological and Ecological Principles
- CIV ENV 203: Earth and the Anthropocene
- CIV ENV 260: Environmental Systems and Processes
- CIV ENV 346: Ecohydrology
- CIV ENV 364: Sustainable Water Systems
These courses are foundational in understanding not only how the Earth system functions, but also the footprint of humans on the planet. These courses also address how one can manage air, soil, and water to control pollution, treat wastewater, and provide drinking water.
Elective Courses
Two elective courses provide the opportunity for students to specialize in either biological, chemical, or transport processes related water systems.

For further information and registration, please contact Jean-François Gaillard, coordinator and professor of civil and environmental engineering. Students with a strong interest in environmental engineering may also wish to consider McCormick’s Combined BS/MS Program and work toward a more specialized graduate degree in the discipline.
