ELEC_ENG 495: Statistical Optics

This course is not currently offered.

Prerequisites

ELEC_ENG 382 or permission of instructor

Description

Review of the basics of Fourier optics and especially probability and random process which are fundamental to a correct understanding of random signals and noise. The noise and coherence of lasers and LED would be quantitatively developed. The Fourier and statistical analysis of optical imaging would be covered.

REQUIRED TEXT: Statistical Optics (Wiley) by Joseph W. Goodman, 1985

COURSE COORDINATOR: Prof. Horace Yuen

COURSE OUTLINE:

  1. Review of electromagnetic wave propagation, diffraction and Fourier optics (1.5 weeks)
  2. Probability and random process, general theory of space-time coherence (3 weeks)
  3. Noise in lasers and detectors (1.5 weeks)
  4. Intensity interferometry and receiver performance (2 weeks)
  5. Imaging system fundamentals and partial coherence effect (2 weeks)
