MSIT PT Student Gets Data Job at Kellogg
Liam Sexton talks about his new role as Associate Director of Data Strategy for Northwestern's Kellogg External Relations.
Liam Sexton is only in his first quarter in the Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) part-time program option at Northwestern Engineering, but already he is seeing the benefit of the pursuit.
Sexton, who currently works at Northwestern in Alumni Relations & Development, was recently hired as Associate Director of Data Strategy on the Advancement Analytics team for Northwestern's Kellogg External Relations. Sexton begins the new position on November 11.
In his new role, Sexton will be responsible for policies around entering and sharing data, as well as prioritizing data integrity and collection projects to help Kellogg’s teams better measure progress and meet their goals.
"I’m looking forward to contributing to a high-functioning team and making an impact at what I consider to be the best business school in the country," Sexton said.
He's confident that contribution will be aided by the lessons he learns in Northwestern's MSIT program. Specifically, he believes that studying subjects like data analysis and statistics, data science, computer systems, and information security will be directly applicable to his new position.
"I was really intrigued by the business application aspect of the MSIT curriculum," he said. "I think it is very valuable to study IT in the context of how it will be used in the real world."
Sexton is also excited about the opportunity to work with his MSIT study group to further develop and hone his teamwork skills.
"I’m excited about this opportunity," he said, "and I know the MSIT program will give me the tools I need to be successful in this new position."
