One of the highlights of my job is talking with prospective students about their career aspirations about how Northwestern Engineering's Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) program can help them achieve those goals. Last year, I turned to this blog to provide tips for applying to the MSIT program. This year, I'd like to examine five common questions I hear from prospective students considering the program.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE CONNECTED WITH A CURRENT MSIT STUDENT OR MSIT ALUM?

I know that while it is great for prospective students to talk with me and my fellow program managers, some of the most insightful perspectives they'll be able to get are from students or alumni who have experienced the program firsthand. That is why we are always happy to connect applicants with someone who went through the program or is currently experiencing it for themselves.

Additionally, if applicants are willing to give me a little information about their backgrounds or interests, my team and I do all we can to make a connection with someone who has a similar experience. Sometimes, prospective students want to know the benefits of the program given their particular skill set, and other times they want to know what it's like to work in a study group.

I think there are a lot of questions people have as they're looking at grad programs, so being able to speak with someone who was in their shoes can sometimes make the final decision a little easier. For those wanting to connect with a current student or recent graduate, please email me at abigayle.shay@northwestern.edu.

DOES TUITION COVER ANYTHING BESIDES CLASS TIME?

Yes. Unlike most other graduate schools or grad programs, our tuition costs include MSIT class books, catered breakfasts and lunches for Saturday classes, staff support, and additional University resources. Full-time students also receive a CTA U-Pass to assist with transportation around the Chicago area.

IS THERE ANY WAY TO HAVE THE GRE/GMAT REQUIREMENT WAIVED?

While the GRE/GMAT is listed as a requirement, part-time MSIT applicants have the opportunity to have that part of the application process waived. For that to happen, applicants need to submit a copy of their undergraduate transcripts, resume, and a short MSIT Interest Statement. In some cases, we may request a brief math conversation between the applicant and the MSIT Director before waiving the requirement.

DO I HAVE TO SEND MY OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT AND SCORE REPORT WHEN I APPLY?

No. You are required to scan your Educational Testing Service (ETS) score reports and undergraduate transcripts as part of your application. We only require official documentation directly from your undergraduate school and/or ETS once you are enrolled. Until then, save your money!

HOW SOON WILL I HEAR A DECISION AFTER APPLYING?

We review applications year-round on a rolling basis. Once you submit your application, we try to get back to you within a month about whether or not we'd like to schedule an interview. These interviews ideally are done in-person but can also be done online via Zoom. When your interview is complete, we strive to get a decision back to you within two or three weeks. After that, you have one month to submit a $500 non-refundable deposit that goes toward your fall tuition.
