Northwestern Engineering's Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) program graduated its latest class of students in June. Before walking across the stage, some of the program's graduates took time to reflect on their time in MSIT and how the program prepared them for their professional journey.
Where will you be working after graduation?
Henry Kang: KPMG as a technology strategy consultant
Qili Sui: Northwestern University as a developer at the Center for Talent Development
Thomas Sparks: Invenergy LLC as an information technology infrastructure engineer
What was your favorite MSIT class and why?
Henry Kang: Technology Strategy and Enterprise Architecture. Previous courses helped build a strong foundation of integrating technology and business aspects. Technology Strategy and Enterprise Architecture course provided learnings that required critical thinking and problem solving skills toward real life business cases. It enabled me to bridge the gap between business and technology.
Qili Sui: Cybersecurity Leadership helped me grow fast in terms of public speaking.
What are some of the most important lessons you learned in the program?
Thomas Sparks: Thought leadership, understanding the true needs of the business, and understanding that the technology isn't where you start on that journey.
Henry Kang: How to think differently. You can be successful with your knowledge and experiences, however, you can go above and beyond if you know how to leverage and collaborate with your team.
How do you think the program prepared you for life after MSIT?*
Thomas Sparks: MSIT gave me renewed career direction on my path to becoming a CIO.
Qili Sui: I learned a lot from my study group. I learned how to collaborate with people from different academic and cultural backgrounds.
What advice would you give to future MSIT students?*
Thomas Sparks: Ask a lot of questions and always speak up.
Henry Kang: Work with your study group, and take full advantage of what the MSIT program and Northwestern offer.
