Haile, Hersam Named Electrochemical Society Fellows
Fellows are recognized for advanced individual technological contributions
Northwestern Engineering’s Sossina Haile and Mark Hersam have been named to the 13-person 2024 class of Electrochemical Society (ECS) fellows.
ECS fellows are recognized for advanced individual technological contributions to the fields of electrochemistry and solid-state science and technology, and for service to the ECS. These members are cited for scientific achievements, leadership, and active participation in the ECS.
Haile, Walter P. Murphy Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the McCormick School of Engineering, works to expose the relationship between structure, chemistry, and properties in electrochemically functional solids, particularly oxides, as relevant to sustainable energy technologies. Her work in fuel cell science and technology has pushed the field to new insights and record performance metrics. In parallel, she has created new avenues for harnessing sunlight to meet rising energy demands and demonstrated viable solutions to the challenge of hydrogen delivery.
Hersam, Walter P. Murphy Professor and Chair of Materials Science and Engineering, specializes in the synthesis, purification, functionalization, and application of low-dimensional nanoelectronic materials including monodisperse carbon nanotubes, graphene, plasmonic nanoparticles, transition metal dichalcogenides, hexagonal boron nitride, black phosphorus, and borophene. His nanocarbon materials have been incorporated into multiple commercialized electrochemical energy storage technologies including fuel cells, supercapacitors, and batteries.
The ECS works to advance theory and practice at the forefront of electrochemical and solid-state science and technology, and allied subjects.
