Career Development

There are many resources available to current students to help them find the right job. Those who are interested in obtaining an internship or a full-time position may find the following resources useful:

  • The Engineering Career Development is located in Ford 2.350. The office helps provide career advice to engineering students and helps them find internship and co-op positions.
  • Northwestern Career Advancement offers comprehensive career services including career counseling and assessment, resume reviews, and individual job searching assistance.  
  • Take advantage of the networking and mentoring opportunities available through the Northwestern Alumni Association.

Diversity and Inclusion

Campus Inclusion & Community
In addition to facilitating bias incident reporting through RespectNU, CIC provides reviews and reports on topics such as the Black House renovation; and houses the departments of Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA)Student Enrichment Services (SES), and Social Justice Education (SJE).

Faculty Diversity and Excellence
Career development workshops, funding programs, and other initiatives from the Provost's Office focused on increasing faculty diversity

Feinberg School of Medicine Anti-Racism Toolkit
Resources to address the public health crisis of racism, including suggested books, films, podcasts, and online tools for continued learning

Institutional Diversity & Inclusion Resource Guide
In addition to the comprehensive campus resource guide linked above, the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion publishes annual DEI reports, highlights relevant academic centers on campus, and manages several task forces and initiatives.

Native American and Indigenous Initiatives
Resources for supporting and understanding Northwestern's current and historical relationships with Native American communities

TGS Office of Diversity and Inclusion
Learn more about The Graduate School's student engagement resources (including a monthly newsletter for URM grads and postdocs and a diversity peer mentor program); funding opportunities; and recruitment efforts. TGS has also collated inclusive pedagogy info from the Searle Center, Provost's Office, AccessibleNU, and other University units as well as external sources.

International Student Resources

Office of International Student and Scholar Services
OISS offers a range of support for international students, including advising (scroll down on the home page to the “Contact Your Advisor” section to find yours!); visahousing, and tax information; and fun programs such as Graduate Sidekicks and family events with the Community Council for International Students

TGS International Student Services
TGS has consolidated many helpful resources, including English Language Programs, which provides free language instruction, and Coffee Talk, a dialogue series created by Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and OISS.

MSE Listserv 
The MSE Department now has a listserv for international students and scholars! To receive updates from MSE_INTERNATIONAL@listserv.it.northwestern.edu, please request access from matsci@northwestern.edu.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
CAPS offers counseling services, mental health resources, and virtual workshops for undergrad, graduate and professional students. The intended purpose is short-term support. Group or individual therapy options are available.

Wellness
For more wellness resources, you can visit the Wellness at Northwestern site for students or the Well-being and Work/Life and Family webpages from HR for grad students, postdocs, faculty, and staff. The department recognizes and rejects stigma around mental health issues in higher education, and we encourage all members of our community to take advantage of support resources. Highlights from the above links include:

National Resources

  • Crisis Text Line: For 24/7 free and confidential support, text HOME to 741741.
  • Trans Lifeline: For 24/7 peer support from trans people for trans people, call US: 877-565-8860 / Canada: 877-330-6366.
  • LGBT National Help Center: 24/7 free and confidential peer support for member of the LGBTQ community via phone (888-843-4564) or online chat
  • National Domestic Violence Hotline: 24/7 free and confidential support via phone (1-800-799-SAFE (7233)) or online chat for people affected by domestic violence or intimate partner violence

Reporting Harassment, Hate Crimes, Discrimination, or Bias

Office of Equity
If you wish to report a discrimination, harassment, or sexual misconduct matter, you can do so by contacting the Office of Equity or by completing one of their reporting forms. The Office of Equity also offers resource guides and a list of confidential resources

Office of Community Standards
Report a concern, whether general or related to a specific issue (e.g. sexual misconduct, stalking, dating or domestic violence, hate)

Respect NU & Bias Incident Response Team 
Report a concern about wellbeing or behavior of a Northwestern student, or if you have experienced an incident for which a Northwestern student is responsible
