Description
The aim of this course is to introduce mathematical modeling to students interested in applied mathematics. The intended audience are undergraduate seniors in applied mathematics or 1st year graduate students interested in applied mathematics.
Mathematical formulation of models for phenomena in the real world will be discussed. Simplification, dimensional analysis, scaling laws, similarity solutions. Examples in control theory, mechanics, population dynamics, optimal running, and others will be given. Mathematical ideas will be introduced as needed to model the phenomena.
Students will develop mathematical models of real world phenomena. They will present their major project to the class; in addition, a written report is required.
