Advising

The McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science assigns a faculty adviser to each incoming freshman.  During the spring quarter of freshman year, all students who have declared Biomedical Engineering as their major will be assigned a faculty adviser within the BME Department. BME 101 Introduction to Biomedical Engineering offers students an opportunity to get information about the BME curriculum, research, co-op, and careers in industry and medicine.

You can find the name of your adviser in the McCormick Advising System. Adviser office locations and email addresses can be found on the Faculty page.

Look for an email from your adviser prior to Advising Week with instructions on how and when you can sign up for advising.

Students who need an adviser or who are unable to reach their advisor should email Professor Shu Liu, the BME Advising Director.

Making the Most of Advising

Advisers are happy to set aside time each quarter to meet with students for advising. However, their time is limited. In general, good preparation makes for useful advising appointments.  When you meet with your adviser, make sure to complete your study plan prior to meeting.  In addition to talking about your course plans, you should take this opportunity to discuss summer opportunities, career plans or graduate school options, undergraduate research, and any difficulties you may be encountering.
