Prem Kumar Accepts Optica Editor-in-Chief Position

Prem Kumar will succeed Alexander L. Gaeta on January 1, 2020.

Northwestern Engineering Professor Prem Kumar will take the helm as Editor-in-Chief of Optica, The Optical Society’s monthly peer-reviewed journal for optics and photonics content. His two-year term begins January 1, 2020.

The OSA Board of Editors Nominating Committee approved Prof. Kumar’s appointment on October 24. The board also appointed Kumar to a concurrent position as member of the OSA Board of Editors. Kumar will provide editorial oversight of Optica and play an integral role in developing policies, procedures, and strategies to cultivate the future of OSA scientific journals.

Kumar is the SBC Professor of Information Technology and Director of the Center for Photonic Communication and Computing at the McCormick School of Engineering. He also holds an appointment as professor of physics and astronomy in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on the development of novel fiber-optic devices for ultrahigh-speed optical and quantum communication networks.
