2021 ECE Annual Awards Winners
Nine students and faculty were recognized during the annual ceremony
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering recognized nine students and faculty on June 3 during the annual departmental awards ceremony.
The event, held via Zoom, included a lecture titled “Teaching in a Pandemic” from Pedram Khalili, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, who won the department’s best teacher award last year.
Winners include:
Alexander Kolar received the outstanding graduating senior computer engineering award.
Siyuan Chai and Nathaniel Coirier received the outstanding graduating senior electrical engineering award.
Alain Kangabire, advised by Matthew Grayson, professor of electrical and computer engineering, received the best undergraduate research/design award.
Gamze Gul received the best teaching assistant award.
Jinyang Liu, advised by Thrasos Pappas, professor of electrical and computer engineering, received the best MS electrical engineering thesis award for “Texture Similarity Metrics on Inter-class Textures.”
Baiting Luo, advised by Qi Zhu, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and (by courtesy) computer science, received the best MS computer engineering thesis award for “Sybil Attack Detection in VANET.”
Zifan Zhou, advised by Selim Shahriar, professor of electrical and computer engineering, received the best PhD electrical engineering thesis award for “Experimental and Theoretical Investigations of Subluminal and Superluminal Lasers for Precision Metrology.”
Josiah Hester, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, received the Allen Taflove Best Teacher Award, which was newly named in honor of the late Allen Taflove, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Northwestern.
