Visas for International Students

International students can begin the student visa process once you activate your NetID and receive an email from the Office of International Student and Scholar Services.

Health Insurance

Northwestern requires all degree-seeking students to carry the appropriate health insurance coverage. Consequently, the university defaults each student into the Northwestern University Student Health Insurance Plan (NU-SHIP) for the quarter they are admitted and start their MEM degree.  Newly admitted students must confirm enrollment or waive NU-SHIP during that quarter’s open enrollment period.  In addition, at the start of each subsequent academic year (Fall quarter) a student will need to confirm or waive NU-SHIP enrollment online in CAESAR. For additional information about NU-SHIP coverage, confirming or waiving NU-SHIP enrollment, or annual Northwestern insurance requirements, please see the Northwestern Student Insurance website.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS

Academics

All Northwestern Engineering graduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better to graduate, and are required to complete 12 MEM courses to satisfy the degree requirements. The degree consists of 7 core courses, 2 Advanced Engineering Methods courses, and 3 electives. Please review the MEM Student Policies document and the MEM Curriculum page for more information.

Statistics Requirement

A post-calculus, probability, and statistics background is a prerequisite for many of the MEM courses. During summer quarter, MEM requires all new and incoming students to complete a free, no credit, on-line post-calculus, probability, and statistics course. Completing this course will adequately prepare students for the MEM curriculum. Details about the summer course will be sent in late spring 2024. The stats course grade will not appear on a student’s transcript, but MEM will require all students to obtain a “B” or better from the instructor in order to register for subsequent MEM courses. The summer online course is 8-weeks and it will run from late June to mid-August. Furthermore, students cannot enroll in MEM407: Decision Tools until successfully completing the statistics course.

Feel free to email us at mem@northwestern.edu with any questions.
