Jim Coffing is Lead Intellectual Property Counsel for Motorola Solutions, Inc.— a public safety communications equipment and services business. Coffing started his Motorola career as an electrical engineer focused on design and software testing of components for use in 2-way radio products. He then took an assignment in the corporate patent organization, as part of a program to increase Motorola’s patent filings. While attending law school, he provided patent prosecution and client counseling services to several Motorola business units as well as its corporate research lab. As a next assignment, Coffing took on a business role, serving as Director of Technology Assets Management, responsible for overseeing technology transfers into and out of the radio business. He followed that post as company-wide Director of Motorola’s technology asset management process and then focused on in-business IP counseling. Since then, Coffing has spearheaded numerous corporate-wide IP efforts, including offensive and defensive projects around LTE technologies, as well as Motorola’s brand enforcement and data rights initiatives. Coffing is a registered patent attorney with an undergraduate degree from Illinois Institute of Technology (BSEE), and advanced degrees from Northwestern University (MEM) and Chicago Kent College of Law (JD).
