MECH_ENG 495: Metal and Ceramic Additive Manufacturing

VIEW ALL COURSE TIMES AND SESSIONS

Description

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a set of manufacturing technologies that automate the layer-by-layer construction of parts, based on computer-aided design files. Over the past decade, AM has experienced significant technical innovation, industry adoption, and public attention, despite some of the major AM technologies being invented over forty years ago. AM has numerous applications across various industries, particularly in the production of highly customized parts with extreme geometric complexity for weight management and performance enhancement.

This course focuses on AM techniques for producing metallic and ceramic parts. The techniques covered in this course include laser powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, electron beam melting, binder jetting, direct ink writing, selective laser sintering, and fused filament fabrication, among others. We will explore the working principles, strengths, limitations, and niche applications of each AM technique. By the end of this course, students will have gained a comprehensive understanding of metal and ceramic AM and the unique advantages and challenges associated with each technique.”
