Description

This course will provide a foundational introduction to the research process. Students will work in groups and with mentors that were determined based on interests and experience from prior coursework. They will kick off their projects by conducting literature reviews, gathering data or resources, and gaining any project-specific skills. Course assignments will be tied to students’ research areas and projects. The course will also expose students to various aspects of research and graduate school through research talks and discussions, panels on research and graduate school, and other sessions.

The research track program leader and students’ research mentor will provide guidance and project mentorship throughout.

By the end of this course, students will produce a major deliverable in the form of a project proposal, describing what they hope to achieve with their research mentor and group by the end of the following winter quarter. They will be expected to first present their proposal progress in weeks 6-7 and then produce a final proposal by the end of the quarter. Students are encouraged to start working on their projects in parallel to developing their proposal in the fall.

This course can count as an advanced elective for McCormick students or an unrestricted elective, otherwise.
