COMP_SCI 496: Academic Job Search

Prerequisites

Post Qualifying Ph.D exam or Instructor consent

Description

This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to successfully search for academic and research focused jobs. Topics covered will include:

  • How to identify and research academic and industrial research lab job openings
  • How to write a compelling CV and cover letter
  • How to prepare for and ace the academic job interview
  • How to network effectively
  • How to negotiate a job offer

Students will also have the opportunity to practice their skills through mock interviews and other activities.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and research academic job openings, as well as industrial lab openings that are a good fit for their skills and interests
  • Write a compelling CV and cover letter that highlights their strengths and accomplishments
  • Prepare for and ace the academic job interview
  • Network effectively with potential employers
  • Negotiate a job offer that is fair and in line with their expectations

Course Format:

The course will be taught through a combination of lectures, class discussions, workshops, and in-class activities. Students will also be required to complete a series of assignments, including a mock interview.

Required Skills:

  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to meet deadlines
