lessThe aim of this workshop is to explore theoretical foundations of optimally combining human and statistical judgments. Complementarity, referring to the superior performance of a human paired with a statistical model over either alone, is a goal when deploying predictive models to support decision-making in high-stakes domains like medicine or criminal justice. However, considerable empirical evidence suggests that complementarity is difficult to design for and achieve in practice, even when experts are assumed to have access to information that a model may not. This workshop considers how to rigorously define, design for, and evaluate human-AI complementarity.

Behavior-Bound Machine LearningAbstract
We have long accepted that machine learning is bottlenecked by what hardware and software can do; we often discuss whether a process is memory-bound or compute-bound, for example. In this talk, I propose that machine learning is also behavior-bound: i.e., what it can accomplish is often circumscribed by the behavior of real-world actors such as workers, firms, and states. The behavior of these actors is only partially observable, hard to change, and often conflicts with that of other actors. My work formalizes these behaviors so that we can build machine learning pipelines that work as well in the real world as they do on paper, with actual humans and not just idealized ones. In this talk, I will discuss: (1) how to overcome the principal-agent problem in dataset creation to create datasets as complex as real-world problems; (2) how Kahneman & Tversky's prospect theory enables us to better align models with human feedback; (3) how to do cost-sensitive evaluation that better captures how firms choose among models in practice.Biography
Kawin Ethayarajh is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton Language and Intelligence (PLI), where he works on behavioral machine learning. He received a PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University, where he was advised by Dan Jurafsky. Prior to that, he was a National Scholar at the University of Toronto, where he received a BSc and MSc in Computer Science. His work has been recognized with a Facebook (Meta) Fellowship and an Outstanding Paper award at ICML 2022.---

Jay Budzik, Fifth Third BankTalk Title
How AI is Transforming Financial Services - 3 applications and 3 challengesAbstract
AI is transforming many industries, and financial services is no exception. But banking is high-stakes and highly-regulated. As such, progress adopting AI in finance has been slow compared to other industries. Concerns over transparency, bias and fairness, and risk of inaccuracies have prevented banks from using AI to enhance products and services. However, new methods have emerged that make banking ripe for AI transformation now more than ever before. This talk will describe how we've overcome challenges to unlock the benefits of AI even in highly-regulated financial services applications. I'll describe three applications in which AI is rapidly transforming banking: consumer lending, customer service, and back office/operations, with case studies and examples of real-world impact. I will show how game-theoretic methods are used to explain the outputs of even complex models to everyday people. I'll describe how we make models more fair and equitable, leading to improved outcomes for women and people of color. Finally, I'll describe how predetermined conversation flows and human-machine collaborations are being used to manage risk of inaccuracies so that even the latest GPT models can be used safely. I'll conclude each section with open research questions and leave plenty of time for Q&A.Biography
Jay Budzik is Senior Vice President, Director AI/ML Model Development and Operations at Fifth Third Bank. Jay oversees AI transformation for consumer products and operations for this Fortune 500 bank with over $200B in assets. Prior to Fifth Third, Jay was CTO at Zest AI, where he led the product, engineering and data science teams that pioneered the use of AI in consumer lending. Zest models are currently used to underwrite over $1 trillion USD in consumer loans annually for clients such as Citibank, Freddie Mac, Discover, Truist, and 100s of credit unions. Earlier in his career, Jay founded and/or served as CTO of several enterprise software companies that used AI to create competitive advantage in the digital advertising and media industries. Jay holds over 40 patents related to his work in AI and machine learning. He earned a Ph. D. in Computer Science from Northwestern University where he was President’s Fellow, and a B. S. with honors in Computer Science from The University of Chicago. He lives in Pasadena, California.---

Presenting Multiagent Challenges in Team Sports AnalyticsAbstract
This talk will present several challenges and opportunities within the area of team sports analytics and key research areas within multiagent systems (MAS). We specifically consider invasion games, where players invade the opposing team's territory and can interact anywhere on a playing surface (ice hockey or soccer). We discuss how MAS is well-equipped to study invasion games and will benefit both MAS and sports analytics fields. We highlight topics along the axes of coaching (i.e., short-term strategy) and management (i.e., long-term team planning) and present high level findings at the intersection of multiagent reinforcement learning and ice hockey.Biography
Dr. David Radke is a Senior Research Scientist with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL). He holds a PhD from the University of Waterloo where he was advised by Dr. Kate Larson and Dr. Tim Brecht. His research areas include artificial intelligence (AI) and ice hockey analytics, specifically focusing on the areas of multiagent systems and reinforcement learning. He has published several papers at several top AI conferences, including IJCAI, AAAI, and AAMAS. He has also published papers at sports analytics workshops and LINHAC, a hockey analytics conference, where he received a best paper award in 2022 for his work with NHL tracking data.Research/Interest Areas:

The Rational Programmer, A Method for Investigating Programming Language PragmaticsAbstract
"The work of software developers directly depends on decisions that
language creators make for them. Therefore, when language creators choose
from a number of design alternatives, they should consider how their
choices affect the developers. Specifically, language creators should
consider the use of a language feature in particular work contexts, an
idea analogous to what linguists call ``pragmatics.'' However, so far,
there are only a few instruments for investigating Programming Language
(PL) pragmatics.To address this gap, I have developed a new scientific instrument called
the Rational Programmer. At the technical level, the Rational Programmer
method puts the idea of simulation, a technique with a long history in
Computer Science, to new use in PL research. The heart of a
rational-programmer simulation is an algorithmic abstraction of using a
language feature for information gathering, interpretation and action in a
work context. Typically, a rational-programmer simulation produces a
recommendation for a use strategy that a developer can employ while
working in the given context. It may also identify a problematic aspect of
a feature's design with concrete evidence, which then the creators and
developers can leverage to address the problem. Finally, a
rational-programmer simulation can inform instructors how to teach
students the effective use of a feature. In this talk, I will demonstrate
the workings of the Rational Programmer method with examples."Biography

Scientists and engineers are increasingly using generative artificial intelligence in research. Some use cases have merely yielded efficiency gains while others have enabled new types of and directions in research that would be impossible otherwise. In this interactive session, the impacts of generative artificial intelligence on the overall integrity of research, and ethical ambiguities resulting from further integration of these tools in research, will be discussed.Biography
Mohammad Hosseini is an assistant professor of ethics at the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago.
