Nowierski will receive a stipend starting in 2014-15 of $32,000 per twelve-month Fellowship Year, given in increments of $2,666 per month.
Applied Physics Graduate Student Samantha Nowierski (Ph.D. '17) has been selected to receive a 2014 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Fellowship.
Nowierski will receive a stipend starting in 2014-15 of $32,000 per twelve-month Fellowship Year, given in increments of $2,666 per month. The GRFP Fellowship period is up to 5 years, with support provided for a maximum of three years.
Nowierski, who is currently an Research Assistant in Prof. Prem Kumar's group, as well as last year, was a TA in EECS for both the 2013 fall and 2014 winter quarters. Before arriving at Northwestern, Nowierski completed her undergraduate degree in Engineering Physics at Cornell University (B.S. '12).
The National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited US institutions. She selected was based of of her outstanding abilities and accomplishments, as well as her potential to contribute to strengthening the vitality of the US science and engineering enterprise.
NSF received over 14,000 applications for the 2014 competition, and made 2,000 fellowship award offers.
This is the 2nd major fellowship in Prof. Kumar's group; the other being the NASA fellowship awarded to EECS Graduate Student Tim Rambo.
