IEMS 393-2: Industrial Engineering Design Project

IEMS 393-1 and senior standing

Description

Large-scale, open-ended team projects from selected fields of industrial engineering. Systems approach requiring establishment of objectives and criteria, analysis and synthesis of alternatives, feasibility, trade-offs, testing, and evaluation. Written and oral reports.

  • This course is a major requirement for Industrial Engineering, and is typically taken in senior year.
  • Enrollment is by permission only; the course must be taken in the quarter immediately following IEMS 393-1.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Students will know and be able to apply the basics of project estimation, scoping and planning
  • Students will know and be able to apply the basics of project scheduling and resource planning as applied to complex unstructured problem solving
  • Data collection, planning and analysis in a complex real world setting
  • Students will know and be able to develop a problem statement working with a client and develop a scope of work and project plan based on the amount of resource and time allowed for the project while still meeting the needs of the advisor and client
  • Students will recognize, know and be able to apply the basic techniques of IEMS including discrete event simulation, Monte Carlo simulation, statistical analysis, sensitivity analysis, social network analysis and financial analysis
  • Students will learn the basics of client management and field research methods
  • Students will experience the complexity and ambiguity of applying IEMS techniques in a real world scenario

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an experiential team based opportunity to solve complex client driven projects that are by definition forms of unstructured problem solving. Students will be required to apply team management and project management skills and techniques to solve a real world problem while applying technical skills and techniques learned through the IEMS undergrad program. Team sizes are 4 to 6 students. Project can take up to 12 or more weeks to complete so projects are initiated at the end of 393-1 where teams are formed and clients assigned.
