Faculty Position in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences (IEMS)
We invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty appointment at the level of assistant professor in IEMS at Northwestern University. The search is for candidates in optimization with applications in machine learning & data science, computational social science, healthcare, or logistics & operations. Applicants should hold an earned PhD or be near completion of their doctoral studies with demonstrated research potential in a related field. A commitment to rigorous and relevant research is essential.
The hire will have opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration via broad research initiatives and centers, including Optimization and Statistical Learning, Center for Engineering and Health, and Center for Deep Learning in IEMS, and Center for Engineering Sustainability and Resilience, Institute for Data, Econometrics, Algorithms, and Learning, Institute on Complex Systems, Transportation Center in the McCormick School of Engineering.
IEMS offers an undergraduate degree and a machine learning & data science minor, a PhD program, and master’s degrees in machine learning & data science and in engineering management. Both the undergraduate and doctoral programs are consistently ranked among the top ten by US News & World Report.
Materials to be uploaded include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a research statement, a teaching statement, a diversity statement, and one research paper. In the cover letter, candidates should share their thoughts on the role of optimization and data science in research and teaching in an IEMS department. Candidates will be asked to provide contact information for three references on the application site. To receive full consideration, all materials should be received by November 15, 2024. For consideration for a first-round interview, please submit materials by October 7, 2024.
The expected base pay range for this position is $140,000-$150,000. This base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment, does not include summer salary, and is subject to negotiation. Research discretionary funding will also be provided. Summer salary, including from sponsored projects, may also be available.
Northwestern University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including years since terminal degree, training, and field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs.

Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Statistical Machine Learning, AI, and Decision Sciences for Manufacturing Systems
Departments of Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences (IEMS)
We invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty appointment at the level of Assistant Professor, jointly appointed by the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) and the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences (IEMS) at Northwestern University. We seek candidates who will lead pioneering research in manufacturing systems, building on core competencies in IEMS. Areas of interest include but are not limited to statistical machine learning and AI, stochastic/sequential/dynamic/adaptive decision making, supply chain management, data-driven decision science, sensor networks, multi-team systems, uncertainty quantification for quality/reliability, autonomous manufacturing systems, etc. Applicants should hold an earned PhD or be near completion of their doctoral studies with demonstrated research potential in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
The hire will have opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration via broad research initiatives and centers at Northwestern, including examples such as Northwestern Initiative for Manufacturing Science and Innovation (NIMSI), NSF Engineering Research Center HAMMER (Hybrid Advanced Manufacturing: Moving from Evolution to Revolution), Optimization and Statistical Learning (OSL), and Center for Deep Learning (CDL).
