Distinguished Alumni Award
In 2016, the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences (IEMS) awarded two Distinguished Alumni Awards, to honor Dr. Timothy Lowe and Lori Nerenberg. The awards were presented by the IEMS Advisory Board during a special ceremony in October 2016. Each year the advisory board selects one or more alumni whose career is marked by extraordinary contributions to the field.
Timothy Lowe
Timothy Lowe is currently a Professor in the Department of Management Sciences at the Henry B. Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa. He began his career there as Director of the Manufacturing Productivity Center at the Tippie College of Business in 1989, while also serving as the C. Maxwell Stanley Professor of International Operations, and receiving a Dean’s Teaching Award in 2004. Dr. Lowe received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State University, and completed his PhD in Operations Research from Northwestern University.
His research interests include operations management, supply chain management, mathematical programming, and location theory. In addition, he has held editorial positions for journals, such as Senior Editor for Manufacturing and Service Operations Management and Departmental Editor for IIE Transactions. He also serves on the INFORMS Fellows Selection Committee.
Lori Nerenberg
Lori Nerenberg is the Senior Vice President at Northern Trust, based in Chicago. She has built her career at Northern Trust for 35 years, in Wealth Management Client and Partner Experience, after graduating from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering. She oversees a team that works 20 projects at a time, and works to maximize production and optimize use of shared resources such as analysts and programmers so no one individual or group is overly taxed.
As Lori has summarized in her own words: “I’m fortunate to have had opportunities to work with others to understand problems and opportunities, imagine and develop solutions, and communicate – both internally and externally. I am passionate about effective leadership and lifelong learning. This applies to my professional life for over 30 y ears at Northern Trust as well as my personal life, where I am an active member of the Women’s Board of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.”
