IEMS 302, 313Description
To Apply:
Submit the RTC Application now. A small cohort of students will be accepted, with priority to sophomores and juniors. The application requires the name of a faculty recommender, but you do not need to request a letter. Applications are due by Monday, November 4.
In this course, we will work together on a collective research problem in industrial engineering. We will use the collective problem as a vehicle to understand more about how IEs conduct research, including methods of investigation, identifying important questions, and addressing common challenges. Although certain kinds of assignments have been determined, much of the direction of the course will be up to you, the students. You will also have the opportunity to work through several smaller research questions to practice applying some of what you learn on your own.
You will be required to present and speak a great deal in this course—part of the point is to collaborate on the research problem itself. To do this effectively, each person must be present, prepared and actively contributing. Some presentations will be formal, and some will be informal. Because of the extensive speaking requirement, you will be allowed to petition this course towards the Public Speaking communications requirement. If you have already fulfilled that requirement, you may use this as a Major/General Technical Elective.
This is not a seminar course, where all of the work is done within the classroom. You will be expected to work hard to learn new skills, new methods, new ways of “doing IE” outside the classroom. We will then apply these skills towards development of a Summer Undergraduate Research Grant (SURG) proposal that you can submit to apply for summer research funding, if you wish to.
